Michael Essien, a former Chelsea midfielder, has reacted to judgments made by AFCON referees when it comes to sending players out.
The African Cup of Nations has seen some severe dismissals, and it’s fair to say that reminds midfielders of the days when they were sent off for hefty tackles.
He wonders if football has become too soft to the point where certain decisions are regarded as red cards.
He followed his critique with a video of a Moroccan player slamming him during the 2008 African Cup of Nations in Ghana, for which he only earned a yellow card.
If VAR existed by then, Essien concluded, many prior players would have earned a spot in the Redsl card history book.
