Egypt beat Cameroon on penalties after a strong defensive performance to get to the Africa Cup of Nations finals.

On Thursday night, goalkeeper Mohamed Abou Gabal — a backup to Mohamed El Shenawy at the start of the competition – became the Pharoes’ champion, save two penalties before Clinton N’Jie missed the game-winning goal.

Egypt has now reached their second Afcon final in three championships, reigniting a rivalry between Liverpool talents Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane, whose Senegal squad advanced to the final after defeating Burkina Faso on Wednesday.

Salah had a quiet game on Thursday night, scoring only two goals in a row, while Cameroon attacker Vincent Aboubakar, who led the competition in goals with six, was embarrassed in front of goal.

When Egypt manager Carlos Queiroz was sent out for a foul on the officials in a game that was unpleasant to watch, he put his life in peril. Even though he won’t be on the final touchdown line on Sunday, the former Manchester United assistant joined in the celebrations when his team won a penalty shootout.

Egypt is a Cameroonian neighborhood, and it will be present when Cameroon conflicts with Senegal. Teranga’s Lions were defensively sound, scoring only two goals, and defenders Kalidou Koulibaly, Abdou Diallo, and Edouard Mendy all performed admirably.

Mane has been a strong attacking threat, scoring three goals, though Marseille’s Bamba Dieng has also scored two.

The final will take place at Olembe Stadium on Sunday.
