FC Barcelona\sNever has winning El Clasico done as much damage to a team as it has to Xavi Hernandez’s Barcelona this season.

Barcelona were jubilant following their victory at the Estadio Santiago Bernabeu in March, and felt that they could win the Europa League simultaneously fighting Real Madrid for the LaLiga Santander title.

However, things have turned out very differently. Barcelona have crumbled and have been unable to duplicate their performance level from the 4-0 triumph against Real Madrid.

Barcelona have played seven times since the match, during which time they have earned three triumphs, a draw and three defeats.

As a result, they have exited the Europa League and their ambitions to win the LaLiga Santander crown are beyond reach.

Things have ended out significantly better for Real Madrid, however. Los Blancos are in the Champions League semi-finals and need just a point from their home match with Espanyol on Saturday to win LaLiga Santander.

Busquets’ warning
Sergio Busquets rarely speaks publicly apart from in post-match interviews, but when he does it is worth listening to him.

In an interview following El Clasico, he warned that the international break might hinder his side whilst simultaneously allowing Real Madrid the time they need to recover.

The Blaugrana were in their finest form of the season and thought to have finally overcome Lionel Messi’s departure after the Clasico win.

Yet, this has proved not to be the case. Ever since, they have been awful with the ball and their defence has not been anything like as solid as it was at the Bernabeu.

Barcelona have also had to endure a lot of off-field controversies as well, such as having 30,000 Eintracht Frankfurt fans in the Camp Nou and Gerard Pique’s leaked audio messages.

A question of survival
Now that they are at this position, Barcelona will have to guarantee that they go through the next five matches as well as possible.

They shot themselves in the foot as they lost 1-0 at home to Rayo Vallecano on Sunday night, but they will be looking to comeback and secure Champions League qualification.
