German defender Antonio Rudiger will quit Chelsea when his contract expires at the end of the season, according to Thomas Tuchel.

Tuchel had tried to persuade Rudiger to stay at Stamford Bridge, but the centre-back has decided to leave the Premier League club after a five-year stint.

The British government’s restrictions on Russian owner Roman Abramovich, which included a condition that existing players could not sign new contracts, impeded Chelsea’s attempts to maintain Rudiger.

The Blues are thought to have made a contract offer to Rudiger before to the sanctions, but the agreement fell through after a request for substantial signing-on and agency fees was reportedly made.

The 29-year-old, who moved to west London from Roma in 2017, is said to want to join Real Madrid, with Barcelona, Bayern Munich, and Paris Saint-Germain also interested in signing him on a free agency deal.

“Toni, the press is all over it.” He wants to quit the club, which is the case. Tuchel stated following his side’s 1-0 win over West Ham on Sunday, “He informed me of this in a private chat.”

“Myself and the club gave everything we had, but we couldn’t fight any longer due of the actions.” We would be able to continue fighting even if the sanctions were lifted, but our options are limited. We don’t consider it as a personal attack. It’s entirely up to him.”

Rudiger had established himself as an important member of Tuchel’s defence, with his leadership and selfless acts winning him fans.

He was unable to participate in the win over West Ham owing to a groyne injury, but he was able to watch the game from the stands.

Tuchel acknowledged that Rudiger’s departure will be a huge loss for a club that won the Champions League and the Club World Cup thanks in part to his steadfast performances.

“He is a crucial player who will remain such until the end of the season.” However, it is a disappointment. “We’ll miss him terribly,” Tuchel remarked.

“In the dressing room, he inspires courage.” The kind that everyone fears, but the kind that can play 50-55 games at a high level.

“In the last year and a half, he has been a great defender for me.” Then we’ll have to come up with another plan.”
